Electromyography (EMG)

Electromyography (EMG) is a neurophysiological test that evaluates the function of muscle and nerve fibers. It can be used to assess possible damage to the nerve roots near the spine, the so-called peripheral nerve fibers in the limbs or face, and muscle fibers. The test is performed by a neurologist with special knowledge in electromyography, possibly in collaboration with a neurophysiological assistant.

Purpose of the examination

In an electrophysiological examination, we utilize the electrical potentials that are generated on the sheaths of nerve and muscle fibers during their activity, and thus assess whether a defect is present, what type it is (damage to the nerve fiber itself or damage to the nerve sheaths), how severe it is, and in most cases, what the chances of recovery are.

Diseases for which the examination is helpful include nerve root damage due to changes in the spine, nerve damage and compression (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome), nerve diseases (polyneuropathy), muscle diseases (myopathy), motor neuron disease, and others.

Description of the examination

At the beginning, the doctor will perform a brief clinical examination and, based on the findings, decide which measurements are necessary, adjusting the selection based on the findings during the examination. Since the treatment is individual, the duration of the examinations varies, most of them are 20 - 30 minutes long. During the examination, you will sit or lie on the examination table. Rings do not interfere with the examination, we will ask you to remove your watch and bracelets. For more reliable measurements, it is sometimes necessary to warm your hands under warm water before the examination.

The examination has two parts. In surface electrode measurements, electrodes are attached to the skin and the nerve is stimulated with several successive electrical stimuli; several nerves are examined in several places. You will feel electrical impulses that may be unpleasant, but do not pose any danger. Since the nerve activates the muscles, small movements/twitches of the muscles also occur. In needle electromyography (EMG in the narrow sense of the word), a needle electrode is inserted into a relaxed muscle and the activity of the muscle is monitored at rest, then the muscle is tensed according to the doctor's instructions and the potentials of the muscle fibers are measured during activity. The selection of muscles follows the innervation pattern of the selected nerves or nerve roots, so the needle is not always inserted in the part of the body where you feel the most pronounced problems. A needle examination is not necessary for all subjects.

Preparing for the examination

No special preparations are required. We just ask that you do not apply cream to the skin on your extremities on the day of the examination, as this causes poorer contact between the electrodes and the skin.
