\nAnesthesiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the complete care of a patient during the preparation for surgery, during the procedure itself and after it, including pain relief. Anesthesia is performed under the direction of an anesthesiologist with the assistance of an anesthesiology nurse. An anesthesiologist is a specialist physician who administers anesthesia, treats life-threatening patients in intensive care units, treats acute and chronic pain, and participates in the care of seriously injured patients.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

\nThe patient meets with the anesthesiologist a few days before the surgery in the anesthesiology clinic. There, the anesthesiologist asks about the patient's general health, previous and current illnesses, allergies, and regular therapy, and gives the patient further instructions for preparing for anesthesia (including regarding taking medications that the patient regularly takes). Before choosing anesthesia, the anesthesiologist explains to the patient the options and advantages of individual types of anesthesia depending on the planned surgery and his health condition, and then, in accordance with the patient's wishes, they agree on the safest method of anesthesia. On the day of the surgery, the patient is received by the anesthesiologist and anesthesiology nurse, who prepare the patient for the surgery, perform anesthesia, and ensure his safety throughout the surgery. The anesthesiologist also provides pain relief after the surgery, usually by administering medications into a vein or by blocking certain nerves.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

\nAnesthesia is a condition in which the patient does not feel pain during surgery. There are several types of anesthesia: general (the patient is asleep), regional (only a certain part of the body is numbed, but the patient is awake or sedated), or a combination of both. The choice of anesthesia depends on the intended surgical procedure and the patient's general condition and associated diseases. The main goal of anesthesia is a safe surgical environment in which the patient does not feel pain, does not move, and has all vital signs within normal limits (blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen concentration). All of his vital functions are carefully monitored and regulated during the procedure so that the surgeon has optimal conditions for performing the operation. The anesthesiologist and the anesthesia nurse ensure the patient's safety at all times during the operation, monitor and regulate the normal functioning of vital organs, and replace lost fluids.\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/section>

Before going to the operating room, the patient must remove glasses, contact lenses, dentures, and all jewelry. The anesthesiologist manages anesthesia so that the sleep lasts an appropriate amount of time depending on the operation, and after the operation, the patient wakes up quickly and pleasantly and does not feel pain. The awakening takes place in the operating room, where the patient is monitored by the anesthesiologist and the anesthesia nurse. When the patient wakes up and is breathing satisfactorily on his own and his reflexes have returned, the anesthesiologist removes the breathing tube (or laryngeal mask airway). The anesthesiologist will make sure that you will not have any pain after the operation, or that the postoperative pain will be as minimal as possible. You will also actively participate in this and you do not have to suffer the pain. Good pain management is very important, because in addition to the fact that pain is unpleasant and makes you suffer, pain also has other adverse effects: increased blood pressure, accelerated heart rate, stress hormones are released... Good pain management enables good cooperation with the physiotherapist, thus shortening and improving your recovery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

Before a planned surgical procedure, the patient should not eat solid food for at least 6 hours before induction of anesthesia. However, they may drink clear liquids (water or unsweetened tea) during this period up to 2 hours before induction of anesthesia. It is also necessary to stop chewing gum or smoking at least 2 hours before induction of anesthesia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>
